Wilson St. Corridor Study Meeting

From Mike Verveer

As you likely know, West Wilson Street from South Broom Street to South Henry Street is scheduled for reconstruction in 2019. Water main breaks and deteriorated pavement over the last year have made this project a priority. As part of the approval for the 2018 reconstruction project on West Wilson Street, the Common Council required that the City conduct a more comprehensive transportation study of the Wilson Street corridor—South Broom Street to South Blair Street. A map of the study area is available here.

With another project scheduled, the City is currently studying how the Wilson Street corridor (South Broom Street to South Blair Street) functions for all modes of transportation. Project public meetings were held in November, December and February, and laid out project background, goals and objectives, existing conditions and possible design alternatives. For this information, see the meeting materials at the project website here.

A fourth public meeting will be held in order to discuss and get feedback on new alternative designs in development.

This meeting will focus on details of the street design options, especially for the South Broom Street to South Henry Street block (the 2019 construction project). The alternatives to be discussed provide different options for accommodating cyclists including: conventional bike lanes, a contra-flow bike lane, and a protected bike facility, and also provide different options for parking and loading. The City is also considering adding two to three blocks of South Broom Street (John Nolen Drive to West Doty Street or West Main Street) to the 2019 project. Previous meetings included some discussion on this portion of South Broom Street, and more detail will be provided at this meeting. A preliminary report will be posted to the corridor study website prior to the meeting.

Wilson Street Corridor Transportation Study Meeting:

Tuesday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m.
Room 215 (formerly Room 260), Madison Municipal Building, 215 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard

Public comments are encouraged at the meeting.

UPCOMING DEMOLITIONS

Please be advised that Brian Molenaar will be filing a demolition permit application on May 8, 2019 for Plan Commission review that calls for a single family house located at 5025 Femrite Dr Madison, WI 53716 to be demolished. For more information regarding this forthcoming application, you may contact the applicant, Brian Molenaar, Strand Associates, Inc., W Wingra Drive Madison, WI 53715 at brian.molenaar@strand.com or (608)251-4843.

Applicant’s Comments:
The property is currently owned by Dupont and is being used as a rental. The current tenants are aware of the proposed situation. This property is proposed to be demolished in support of a future plant expansion. At the moment, the residence needs to be demolished to facilitate the relocation of storm, water, and electric utilities in support of that future expansion. The property is also proposed to be combined with the existing plant property on a future CSM update.

If you have any questions about the Plan Commission demolition permit approval process, please contact the City of Madison Planning Division at (608) 266-4635.

BORDER MISSION TRIP PRESENTATION

On Saturday April 13th, 3:00-4:30 pm, a group from Plymouth UCC in Madison will be presenting “Bringing the Border Home: Reflections on Immigration and the Wall,” sharing stories and reflections of their trip to the southern border of Arizona in January. Plymouth UCC is located at 2401 Atwood Avenue; street parking available only. Child care is available.

In addition to the slide-show presentation, Fabiola Hamdan from Centro Hispano will provide some insight into the immigrant experience here in southern Wisconsin, and how we all can get involved in providing humanitarian aid and advocating for humane immigration policies. Information will be available on how you can volunteer in local efforts. A free will offering will be gladly accepted at this event, to be distributed to local organizations working to help our immigrant neighbors.

Green Valley Arizona, where Plymouth’s mission group stayed, is just 40 miles from the border. Migrants, escaping violence, high unemployment, and poverty in Mexico and Central America, cross the border, mostly by foot and ill-equipped, through the harsh desert, desperate to find work and new lives. We traveled to Nogales (both sides of the wall) and learned of humanitarian efforts to help asylum seekers and migrants in distress, in part through desert water drops, desert searches for those needing assistance, and help for those deported across the border to Nogales, often having all their personal belongings taken from them before being sent back. We witnessed Operation Streamline, the immigration court proceedings. As one of our travelers noted, “One cannot help but be moved to action when one witnesses to what is actually happening at the border, as opposed to only listening to the politically-based commentary.”

More information on these events can be found at www.pcucc.org, or find us on Facebook.
