Action Alert! Contact the Wisconsin PSC to Stop Proposed Utility Shutoffs!

On June 11th, the Public Service Commission (PSC) made a terrible decision, allowing WI utilities to start disconnecting power as of July 25th from those who’ve fallen behind on their payments. Back in March in response to the COVID 19 crisis and grassroots pressure, the PSC had issued a moratorium on such shut-offs, but apparently now the corporate utility lobbyists are back in action at the capitol…

Why should you contact the PSC and insist that the moratorium on utility shutoffs remain in effect?

Many people simply can’t pay their utilities right now, since they are still out of work. It will be life-threatening for many as the summer heat waves ramp up with climate change. Many family farmers and small business owners can’t even operate without electricity. It will deprive many people of their already limited Internet and thereby interfere with their ability to access basic healthcare, social services, remote employment, and online education.

To let the PSC know that they should maintain the utility shutoff moratorium for the duration of the COVID 19 crisis, email: PSCConsumerAffairsMail@wisconsin.gov You can also contact Gov. Tony Evers to express your concerns about this pending PSC decision at: govinfo@wisconsin.gov

Mon. July 20th 4:00 pm McPike Park (202 S. Ingersoll) Nationwide Strike for Black Lives!

Join in solidarity with workers across the country who will walk out of their jobs for 8 minutes and 46 seconds at various times throughout the day. We are calling for an end to police brutality and for accountability from all capitalist systems that oppress Black people, workers, and the rest of the 99 percent. Cars, bikes, skateboards and children/families/wagons are also invited to join the mobile caravan. *Please wear a mask; protective coverings will be available if needed.*

We will uplift the Strike for Black Lives’ demands to center justice for Black people and workers and for elected officials and corporations to do their part. Additionally, we will highlight movement demands to defund police, invest in Black communities, and free everybody, starting with Black people and especially local political prisoners like Yeshua and Sire who were maliciously targeted for arrest because of their political activity.

We understand that all of our liberations are bound together and that a fight for workers is a fight for Black Lives and a fight for all people.. Join us in celebrating our interconnectedness and acting in accountability to Black leadership to demand a better Madison and a better world.

Thurs. July 23rd National Call-In Day to Support the U.S. Postal Service (USPS)! Urge Your Senators to support the Postal Service Emergency Act (S. 4174) Capitol Switchboard #202-224-2541. In the midst of a pandemic, universal mail delivery is a more essential service than ever! Why should should Congress provide $25 billion in emergency COVID-19 to help cover USPS losses/expenses through Sept. 2021? The USPS is still delivering mail to every address in the United States at an affordable and uniform rate – this includes life saving prescriptions and absentee voter ballots – unfortunately, mail volume Is down by a third as businesses are forced to scale back their operations. Thurs. Aug. 6th 6:30 pm Online Book Discussion of Circe, by Madeline Miller – hosted by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF).

In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child–not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power–the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. But there is danger, too, for a woman who stands alone, and Circe unwittingly draws the wrath of both men and gods, ultimately finding herself pitted against one of the most terrifying and vengeful of the Olympians. With unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language and page-turning suspense, Madeline Miller’s retelling of this ancient story is a celebration of indomitable female strength in a patriarchal world.

Some Ways to Get Involved with Ongoing Racial Justice Efforts in the greater Madison community:

Freedom Inc is working to end of violence against women, gender-non-conforming and transgender folks, and children within communities of color by challenging the root causes of violence, poverty, racism and discrimination. http://freedom-inc.org/

Freedom Youth Squad is another local organization that has pushing to getpolice out of schools, promoting otherjustice efforts in our schools, and creating social support and crisis support for youth of color.https://www.facebook.com/FreedomYouthSquad/

Free the 350 Bail Fund is also involved in challenging the prison industrial complex. Many people are held in jail before they receive a fair trial, simply because they can’t afford bail. Often, these are parents of color who are separated from their own kids. https://freethe350bailfund.wordpress.com/

Urban Triage seeks to empower Black families to excel and believe in their own ability to make a differencethrough crisis response, advocacy, psycho-education, community support services, intervention, leadership development and systems training. https://urbantriage.org/

Dane County Time Bank’s Restorative Justice project hosts a hotline to help resolve non-emergency disputes without involving the police. https://danecountytimebank.org/projects/restorative-justice

The Social Justice Center (SJC) is a busy grassroots hub for several community organizations, challenging racism and many other forms of systemic injustice.. https://www.socialjusticecenter.org/

Groundwork s a group of dedicated white anti-racist activists that offer classes and resources to other white people so they can be better educated and organized about these issues. https://groundworkmadison.com/

Invitation to join the Dane County Time Bank’s Transformative Action Network (TAN)!

TAN members are committed to co-conspirator abolitionist action, in line with restorative justice principles. By learning to relate effectively with racism and interrupt patterns of white supremacist culture, TAN members become allies and co-conspirators to Black and Brown community members. Using restorative justice work, TAN is helping Timebank build resilience instead of fragility, action instead of silence and solidarity instead of hierarchy. Abolitionist restorative practices become powerful tools that enhance mutuality and respect across gender, race and class lines. They lead to the kind of collaboration that can move Madison beyond anemic liberalism to real progressive alternatives. Anti-racist restorative practice among Timebankers is leading to racial justice. As James Baldwin wrote, “Any citizen of this country who figures himself as responsible – and particularly those of you who deal with the minds and hearts of young people – must be prepared to “go for broke.” As a network, we are striving to give racial justice everything we have.
