BIKE MADISON UPDATES

Be Bright at Night

With the time change this weekend don’t forget to get out your bike lights, charge them up or check the batteries and put them on your bike. Wisconsin state law requires a white front light and at a minimum a rear reflector. However, a rear light provides much more visibility. In addition, adding reflective materials to your clothing or helmet, a leg band, wheel reflectors or lights will also help increase your visibility. Don’t forget to adjust the angle of your lights so that you are not blinding other riders. Did you know that flashing lights can be disorienting to people so use the solid light setting when possible but especially on paths.

If you encounter riders who do have flashing lights remember they may just be trying to conserve energy if the battery is low or they are not aware of how disconcerting some people find the flashing lights. People with lights that are not adjusted so the light beams down may not be aware that they are blinding people or maybe the light has just shifted since they first adjusted it. They may also have a super bright light because they feel that is the most safe and visible option. You may also encounter people with no light because they forgot it, it has a dead battery or maybe they just don’t have one yet this season. If you encounter someone on the road or path who has made a bad bike lighting choice be considerate and try to be helpful if you engage with them. Getting mad or yelling at people is likely not going to lead to a positive outcome. Read the Wisconsin State Law related to bicycling at night.

With Winter arriving this week it is perfect timing for the Winter Bike Fashion Show this Sat, Nov  2 from 1-4pm at the High Noon Saloon. Come learn how to prepare to ride during the winter or come and share your favorite tips and tricks. Stop by the City of Madison Pedestrian Bicycle Program table and talk to program staff.  Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation for Madison’s Community School students of winter gloves, snow pants or boots size 13 (kids) to size 6 (adults).

CONSTRUCTION UPDATES

E Johnson St – Underpass Closure & Street Closure
The Yahara River Path underpass of E Johnson St closure has been cancelled. However, as early as next week work will take place in the area of the underpass. There will be temporary surfacing near the entrance and it may be necessary to walk bikes near the underpass entrance. The full  closure of East Johnson St from Baldwin to First St continues through 5am on Mon, Nov 4. The closure of E Johnson St will impact the traffic volumes on other streets in the area so use caution.

Southwest Path Closure – Waite Circle Culvert Reconstruction
This project will reconstruct the culvert and do other minor repairs to infrastructure in the area. This project has closed the Southwest Path until approximately January 10. During this time a marked detour will use Council Crest, Yuma Dr and a protected lane on Midvale.

N Bassett St Parking Protected Bike Lane
N Bassett St is now open although some signage placement is still being completed.  Learn more about how the parking protected bike lane works and how to send feedback on this pilot project.
