I am forwarding below Alder Rebecca Kemble’s blog, in which she announced a meeting of the Equal Opportunities Commission this Thursday at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in the City-County Building. I commend the Commission and Alder Kemble for holding the meeting in a larger room than usual, and I hope that many Northsiders will attend to give the people’s view of a residential limit, which would apply to sex offenders who have violated children, not to all sex offenders.
Twenty-four sex offenders, including 18 child sex offenders, live within a mile of Mendota Elementary School.
This ordinance was proposed in response to a plan by a landlord and the Department of Corrections to place multiple sex offenders in a West Karstens Drive residence within 1,200 feet of the school and even closer to the Vera Court Neighborhood Center, the Troy Gardens Co-housing and several apartment buildings where children live.
This ordinance would require that child sex offenders would not be able to live within 2,000 feet of a school or community center. The ordinance would not affect those currently living in such an area.
To speak on the matter, residents must register and — usually — speak at the beginning of the meeting, though speakers may be asked questions later. There is a 3-minute limit per person.
Regards,
Former Alder Anita Weier

Sex offender residency ordinance
June 8, 2015 2:29 PMThe Equal Opportunities Commission is scheduled to meet at 5 P.M. on Thursday, June 11th in room 201 (Common Council Chambers) of the City-County Building (210 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.) to discuss the proposed ordinance that would require sex offenders returning to the community to not live within 2,000 feet of a school or community center.
The EOC has scheduled the Department of Corrections to attend this meeting to talk about policies/procedures regarding housing placement for sex offenders in Madison. Alders of the Common Council and members of the Public Safety Review Committee have expressed interest in attending to hear DOC’s presentation, which is the reason staff has secured a larger room. The public is welcome to attend and comment at this meeting. It will also be filmed by City Channel for later viewing in case you are unable to attend. The agenda for the meeting is here.
