I have said over and over that the new brand of “fiscal conservatives” mean that if they are for it, there is no amount of money they wont spend. if they are against something, there is no amount of money that is justified in spending! We now have Exhibit A right here in Dane County.
Brenda and I wrote about the right wing radicals on the Dane County Board holding up paying bills to prove a point(that point being they were not responsible and do not understand economics very well, but thats beside the point). Their little “show of force” will end up costing the taxpayers up to $100,00 and more. When the budget is as bad as it currently is in Dane County, every dollar wasted will harm much needed programs. But hey they are “fiscally conservative” after all!
Then we have the second side of the story, as chronicled by the WSJ. One of the misguided ten on the Dane County Board, is Kurt Schlicht who also happens to be the Village President of Cross Plains.
CROSS PLAINS — Kurt Schlicht never envisioned that a plan to help revitalize the village of Cross Plains’ downtown would turn into a political battle usually reserved for a national or statewide election.
“It’s amazing how divisive it is for the village,” Schlicht, the village president, said of Tuesday’s referendum that will decide the fate of a proposed $4.3 million plan that includes moving Black Earth Creek.
Its funny how the republicans have made a major issue out of any spending whatsoever for the last four years(including this candidate for state senate) and Schlicht is surprised when he wants to spend $4.3 million in Cross Plains?
If voters approve the plan, Schlicht said the village would pay about half of the $4.3 million price tag while public and private grants would pay for much of the rest.
Roessler stands to benefit because much of the money would be used to spruce up Lagoon Street, which runs parallel to Highway 14 and right next to Black Earth Creek. The prized trout stream would be moved to make room for the improved road.
Meantime, buildings owned by Roessler that are located between Lagoon Street and Highway 14 would be razed for a new Roessler development.
Hmmmm, an expensive venture paid for by taxpayers, where the local politicians friends and supporters would benefit greatly. It seems like I have heard of that happening before.
If the plan passes, owners of $250,000 homes will see their taxes increase $160 per year, according to Schlicht. He acknowledged that a tax increase would be difficult on Cross Plains’ elderly citizens.
Wait! didn’t Schlicht run on NOT raising taxes? Will a tax increase ONLY be difficult on elderly citizens? D\'oh!
“This isn’t wasteful spending,” Schlicht said.
Of course it is not wasteful spending. There is an open checkbook for anything that can help a “conservatives”(termed used VERY loosely) career or supporters.
O Hypocrisy, thy name is Kurt Schlicht!
