I sure hope so! But they are off to a terrible start. They already met in closed session yesterday. And plan more closed session meetings.
ANNOUNCEMENT
DR. GUTIERREZ RESCINDS HIS ACCEPTANCE TO BE NEXT MMSD SUPERINTENDENT
Cites COVID-19 Crisis in Driving His Decision to Stay in Texas to Support his Community
MADISON – Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) Board of Education President, Gloria Reyes, announced that the MMSD Board was informed of Dr. Matthew Gutierrez’s decision to stay in the Sequin Independent School District instead of coming to Madison. Dr. Gutierrez stated that he could not leave his district during this incredibly challenging time as he felt an overwhelming need to stay and support the students and staff in his current district.
“This was both surprising and disappointing,” said MMSD School Board President, Gloria Reyes. “As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators across the country have been forced to make incredibly difficult decisions, and the MMSD family understands and fully appreciates Dr. Gutierrez’s decision to continue to support his community, the only home he’s ever known, during these incredibly challenging times. Ultimately, the situation changed in a way that nobody could have predicted, making the timing for Dr. Guteirrez’s departure from his current role no longer an option for him personally.”
The MMSD Board of Education will be scheduling an upcoming closed session meeting to decide next steps and to carefully evaluate all options. No additional information is available at this time.
Throughout this crisis, MMSD will remain student focused and continue its work to ensure the safety and well-being of our students and staff, while providing a virtual learning alternative so that every student continues to have the opportunity to learn. Keeping students connected and engaged though a meaningful virtual learning experience is a top priority, and we are very appreciative of MMSD staff, students and community for coming together in support of the effort to move virtual learning forward.
Communicating issues that impact the MMSD family as soon as possible is important to MMSD, and the district remains committed to providing the community with more information as it is made available.
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
Illegal meeting? Not properly noticed?
Behind closed doors again!
They apparently had a Closed Session Meeting last night – I don’t know when that got added to Board Docs – it wasn’t there when I looked at the legal notice on Saturday.
Nothing is time stamped so I don’t know when this was added to Board Docs and its not on the legal notice and there is no amended legal notice.
What meeting occurred?
Here’s the meeting agenda.
The only item on the agenda is
2. Considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility, pursuant to Wis. Stat. Sections 19.85(1)(c)
With the Recommended action of
It is recommended that the Board of Education go into closed session pursuant to Wis. Stat. Secs. 19.85(1)(c) for the purpose of considering employment, promotion, compensation or performance evaluation data of any public employee over which the governmental body has jurisdiction or exercises responsibility
I suppose we can wait 6 months for the meeting minutes to come out to find out what happened.
WHAT’S NEXT?
The press release I got at 10pm last night says this
The MMSD Board of Education will be scheduling an upcoming closed session meeting to decide next steps and to carefully evaluate all options. No additional information is available at this time.
I’m guessing we will see more closed door meetings, weak public process that is not transparent and more excuses. I hope the leadership of the school board, Gloria, I’m looking at you – does a better job leading the community through an open, transparent and robust, not-hurried process.
I hope. But I”m not hopeful.
