So, the solution to homelessness is permanent housing. I couldn’t agree more. But we have a 2% vacancy rate and people who have jobs at social service agencies and the state can find housing. So, how are people who have any flaws on their housing record ever going to find housing, even if they have money?
Permanent housing is going to be an expensive plan. Estimates of the number of affordable housing units, for the people who live here, are 11,000 -19,000 homes. And it’s going to take a long time. Even if we started today to build new units, it would likely be a year before they were available for people to move in.
So, what’s the short term plan? This morning’s plan is this for the homeless on East Washington.
Which is, as I have already stated, so offensive I can’t hardly speak. I’ve become quite fond of some of the people who have been living there, flaws and all. And Soglin’s characterization of them as drugging criminals is so hurtful to people who are working to turn their lives around in whatever way that they can. It’s almost like he wants to just kick them when they are down to make sure that they stay there.
So Paul, what’s the plan? You seem to have all the answers. Do tell.
I didn’t realize how deeply I believed that once homelessness was visible to the rest of our community, it couldn’t possibly continue status quo… and now seeing that this has finally happened, and the need is so, so visible… there’s nothing changing! What happened to our commitment to Teresa McGovern? Doesn’t anyone remember Dwayne Warren? It is just heart-breaking
