Sunny Monday Morning Round Up

It’s going to be in the 60s this week! No more fog!

CONVENIENT MEMORY LOSS ON D’ANGELO
From bad news Friday. The Mayor remembers, no matter what he says. I distinctly remember being in a leadership meeting with VanRooy and the Mayor where we were talking about a personnel matter and they Mayor wryly noted something to the effect of “That’s nothing compared to the envelope Mayor Bauman left me about D’Angelo.” He knew. Especially since that was a year after he was elected when I was council president.

NOW THE HOMELESS AND POOR MATTER
When we need to count them in the census so that we can get money to our community – they matter. Here’s an idea, spend that money on the needs of the homeless and poor instead of just counting them.

ANTHONY BROWN
Passed away during a liver transplant this weekend. Thank you for everything you did for the Madison Community.

HALF A MILLION DOLLARS
When it comes to paratransit for persons with disabilities, should price matter? I’d say no if the price was close, but $347,000 on a $2.2M contract is a chunk of change for two closely scored applications.

THERE GOES ANOTHER CITY REVENUE SOURCE
It’s March 15th, alternate side parking done for another year.

MAYOR EXPLAINS
Why the hell could we spend $300,000 on a trolley study, but when it comes to siting a train station, we seem powerless? The mayor explains:

Some have asked why Madison isn’t running its own process or why the city isn’t advocating strongly for one site. The reason is that we don’t have nearly enough information to do that responsibly. I do not want to expend taxpayer funds to evaluate a station before we know what the rules of the game are. What we need is a process where candidate sites are identified, fully evaluated for their technical feasibility, convenience for riders, adjacent development potential and other factors. Only after we have all the objective information we need and there are plenty of chances for public input can we come to a consensus on the best station for us.

Dude, now’s the time for some of the spunky, dig in your heels, stubborn to the point of being blind, style of “leadership” you have and you choose now to be m.i.a.? Lack of information isn’t stopping you from supporting $16M in TIF for the Edgewater.

LEASE RENEWAL GROUNDHOG DAY
Erik Paulson is right on this one! I remember Mike Staude sitting in my office on State St. when he was running for office talking about limiting when landlords can start renting apartments . . . since we’ve been at the Social Justice Center for 10 years, that was a long, long, long time ago this all started.

STATE JOURNAL LIKES SUNSHINE
When it benefits their business, but not when it comes to strong lobbying disclosure laws. Interesting hypocrisy.

REPEAT
I just liked the analysis by Lueders on the Edgewater lobbying, so I’m mentioning it again here.

OUTING REPUBLICANS
Interesting piece. I’m always amazed by the intense anger.

WE JUST DON’T HAVE ENOUGH CRIMINALS
Interesting. That doesn’t match with the spin. Or the amount of crime we hear reported these days, because they can’t be bothered to deal with other news.

BYE, BYE COAL
See ya! Don’t let the door hit ya on the way out.

SCHOOL BOARD WEEK AHEAD
Thanks again TJ!

SCHOOL BOARD BUDGET
Don’t forget, next week is the first public hearing on the budget. Monday, March 22, 6 p.m. at the UW Space Place in Villager Mall – 2300 S. Park St. I was amazed to learn that they don’t take public input during many of their budget meetings, so that is the time to give your input. Unfortunately, its the same night that the Edgewater will be at the plan commission.

That’s it for this morning . . . I have more I haven’t gotten to for tomorrow.
