I had some “extra” time this evening I wasn’t anticipating, so . . . here it is!
IT’S 9:15 AND . . .
Edgewater is just starting at the Urban Design Commission . . . so I had some time for blogging.
THANKS TO THE MAYOR!
Yeah, that‘s another reason why I had the “extra” time where I wasn’t double booked this evening. . . apparently the Mayor, probably in an attempt to get some additional sponsors, is asking ALRC to refer the bartender/musician etc drinking ban to a later date as he tries to figure out what to do. Tho, it does seem that he and his alcohol czar need to get on the same page.
JUDGES RULE ON CASES OF MAJOR DONORS TO CAMPAIGNS?
Sure, why not? Groan. In other court news . . . Gableman declares himself not biased. Of course.
NOVEL IDEA, TRUST POOR PEOPLE
I concur with Kathy Sanifur! I’m proud of Middleton Outreach Ministry! I hope this works and others follow suit. Imagine, feeding hungry people when they are hungry, not based on some arbitrary rules.
MY STAAFF BEAT ME TO IT
Elizabeth was quick to inform me that the dates the court chose to be closed for four furlough days happen to coincide with 4 days when people would be getting evicted in Dane County (Eviction trials are held on Fridays). How convenient! I wonder how long it takes for them to change that policy. And, it just occurred to me, that’s twelve more days people will be stuck in jail because they can’t get arraigned (Friday plus the weekend).
ERROR!
Paid sick leave hearing was today, not yesterday.
The hearing is with Dist. IV Court of Appeals in Madison. It will hear the case on January, 20, 2010 at 10:00AM on the 2nd floor of East Wing of State Capitol in Madison. The judges will be Judge Vergeront, Judge Lundstein, and Judge Higginbotham.
SHORELINE ZONING ORDINANCE VETTED BY PLAN COMMISSION?
Here’s the minutes. Perhaps the most requested minutes in the city in some time. Although, we need to remember, they may have been informed, but they were not discussing the merits of, or deciding on the issue at the meeting. The chair described these meetings as more of a briefing for the commissioners than a time for decisions.
WHAAAAAAAAAAAA! BUT ITS ALL ABOUT THE CARS
How dare the state tell the MPO’s they need to work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they’re doing all they can! Just ask Eileen Bruskewitz who says
“We’re already looking at ways to increase the efficiency of cars and keep traffic moving at a good pace,” Bruskewitz said of the Madison MPO. “There’s only so much we can do.”
Psst, Eileen, there are other modes of transportation besides cars. Two sites that use this in the Chicago area.
Woman charged with killing baby again
found incompetent for trial
Was she found incompetent again, or kill a baby again?
UGH, I FEEL SICK
Why was the person in this case forced to resign? For alleging sexual discrimination? It’s bad enough D’Angelo was such a creep, ended up in federal prison and now cost the city hundreds of thousands of dollars, but, why was the person brave enough to bring the issue forward forced out of city employment? Didn’t that happen in streets department as well when a woman there complained about discrimination. Shouldn’t the city’s no tolerance policy be targeting the perpetrators, not the victims? I wouldn’t be annoyed, but it was common knowledge not to get into an empty elevator with that guy.
VISIONS OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING
The next People’s Housing Vision meeting will be held on Thursday, January 28th at 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Central Library. We are presently drafting our vision and will be reviewing our draft at the upcoming meeting. Great thanks to all who have contributed to this grassroots effort thus far by coming to meetings and sharing ideas, researching various policy proposals and assisting with drafting the vision. Please join us next Thursday to share your thoughts as we move forward at this critical point in the process.
BUY LOCAL!
Congrats to the folks working on buying local food. The county is doing good work here, and now they got a grant to support it! Another crazy progressive idea that works in support of economic development . . .

Subject: ZCRAC MEETING-Zoning Ordinance Amendment Referral from Common CouncilHi,
At last night’s meeting of the Common Council an ordinance was introduced proposing an amendment to the existing zoning code regarding waterfront setbacks. The proposed zoning code amendment was referred to the Zoning Code Rewrite Advisory Committee for its review and recommendation back to the Plan Commission prior to the Plan Commission’s February 8th meeting. The links to the proposed text amendment are provided below. To open the links press the Ctrl key and click.http://legistar.cityofmadison.com/detailreport/matter.aspx?key=18991
http://legistar.cityofmadison.com/detailreport/Reports/Temp/1202010132633.pdfStaff have identified two potential ZCRAC meeting dates:
· Tuesday January 26th
· Wednesday February 3rd (A 5:00 p.m. start time should allow people to attend both the ZCRAC meeting and the Urban Design Commission meeting’s discussion of the Edgewater Hotel project if that item is on the agenda)The meetings will start at 5:00 p.m. I need to reserve a meeting room, so I don’t know the meeting location at this time.
Please let me know as soon as possible which dates work for you. I will send a follow-up e-mail with more details as soon as I hear back from everybody. Thanks and sorry about the short notice

Subject: Common Council Work Group to Review Snow Policies & ProceduresFirst let me take this opportunity to thank all of those alders who expressed their concerns or interest in enhancing the level and quality of snow removal throughout the city. Special appreciation to Ald. Lauren Cnare, Ald. Marsha Rummel, Ald. Bryon Eagon, Ald. Paul Skidmore, Ald. Chris Schmidt and Ald. Mark Clear for their willingness to serve on the Council Work Group to Review Snow Policies & Procedures.
The primary focus of this group will be to further assess and recommend specific initiatives that will improve upon and ensure the best quality of service possible.
In addition to the Mayor’s report, “Review of Madison Snow Policies” (dated 12/24/09), the work group, in conjunction with city staff and the Mayor’s office, will likely explore in depth the issues of staffing, equipment, snow removal procedures, environmental impacts and other related areas.
As you can imagine attempting to schedule meeting dates that would not conflict with the various schedules of the work group members is quite challenging. However the following dates have been tentatively scheduled (location TBD):
Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, February 25, 2010 at 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.By tentatively scheduling for these dates and times we did so being sensitive to the alders other committee commitments that begin later in the evening.
Should you have any questions or suggestions hesitate please don’t hesitate to contact me or Ald. Mark Clear in advance of our meetings.
Ald. Tim Bruer
Common Council President
