Tenants and Their Allies Should Watch Where They Shop!

Here’s the M&I and Johnsonville version of businesses tenants and their supporters might want to avoid as they are members of the Apartment Association of South Central Wisconsin who supported SB107 and are supporting AB155 that is up before the Assembly Housing Committee Wednesday at 10:00 that will strip tenants in Madison of their current protections.  (Read more here)

NOTE: This is my opinion and my opinion alone and does not reflect those of any organization I belong to or work for.

Heck, they didn’t just support it, but according to a facebook friend they have this to say:

AASCW not only supports SB107, we worked with Rep. Vos to draft it and sent emails to our members, including to your home office, asking our members to contact their legislators and request they co-sponsor it. AASCW testified at the Senate hearing last week in support of SB107, and will be testifying in support of it’s partner bill, AB155, when it goes to Assembly Committee hearing and full Assembly for a vote.

I had actually given them the benefit of the doubt and thought they have more integrity than to go around the city council and the housing committee. I’m pretty disgusted by their actions as I had previously thought they were sincere in their efforts and collaborative. I know I’ve seen signs that they have changed, but this is the biggest one so far. Suing us over IZ when we disagreed, I understood. Setting up the STEM office without ever talking to TRC seemed really strange, but this . . . wow. They have destroyed all their good will with me and many others and I hope you will tell their members that.

Here’s the list of who showed up to support SB107:
Appearances For
– Nancy Jensen — Dir., Apt. Assn. of So. Central WI
– Jay Koritzinsky — Atty., Apt. Assn. of So. Central WI
– Amy Bliss — WI Housing Alliance
– Adam Frey — Goldleaf Devlpt.
– Peter Kortev (small landlord)
– Tom McKenna (small landlord)
– David Friedman
– Brenda Hofer (small landlord)
– Joe Murray — WI Realtros Assn.

Here’s their list of associate members who should hear from you before you do business with them.  Even homeowners can stand in solidarity with tenants before that next trip to the hardware store or the next time you do home improvements . . . or purchase advertising or internet services, or . . . just check the list. I really wish they would list on their site who their board of directors are, but maybe they are ashamed of it? I”m going to check out who their members are, at one point I know that the housing authorities and the police department were members. Perhaps, we should ask them to re-think that. Meanwhile, check the list of who’s naughty and nice . . .

  1. As a member of AASCW for over 20 years I caution you to remember that not all the businesses necessarily agree/disagree with SB107 and AB155 and most are not aware of the bills existence nor its content.

I agree that from a PR standpoint this is being handled very poorly and is hurting years worth of efforts of groups to work together to make Madison a great place to live.

I urge you to use this as an opportunity for education and discussion with the business members of AASCW about your opinions and why you feel the way you do. If you boycott, you are potentially hurting many working families that are employed by these companies, but do not have anything to do with the actions of an organization the company they work for happens to belong to.

As for my own membership via the company I work for, I have found AASCW and Jay Koritzinsky in particular to be a great resource about the ordinances and making sure we follow the rules set before us to improve our own business practices.

I have appeared many times in court with Atty Koritzinsky and I can honestly say that he does his best to educate the tenant and try to find ways to get problems resolved through stipulations without harming their future credit or housing references. Above all, Atty Koritzinsky treats the tenants with respect and not judgment. He is a skilled mediator and has taught me much in the 20+ years I have worked with him.

  2. Yeah, I didn’t say boycott, just wanted the members to hear from their customers.

And yeah, Jay is pretty awesome most of the time. He even served on our mediation advisory board at one time. Which is why I don’t understand why he and Nancy didn’t try to have a dialog with us about his first. Like I said, good will, destroyed. It will take years to repair this relationship. But I thank them for rallying tenant advocates. Expect them to be more active.
