The Future of Madison Policing

WHAT DO WE WANT FOR POLICING IN MADISON?

COMMUNITY MEETING
OCTOBER 16, 7-9 PM
FIRST CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
1609 UNIVERSITY AVENUE

Now is the time for community input as the Police and Fire Commission selects a new Chief– one who will set the tone and direction of MPD policy and practice for years to come. Give your voice on key issues and questions about the direction of MPD practice and policy for years to come.

WHAT IS THE STANDARD FOR DEADLY FORCE THAT WE WANT FOR OUR COMMUNITY? Beginning in November of 2012, with the shooting of an unarmed man on the east side, there have now been 3 police shootings resulting in the death of citizens — deaths that many people believe were preventable.

SHOULD LAW ENFORCEMENT INVESTIGATE THEMSELVES IN THE USE OF FORCE INCIDENTS? It is not fair to either law enforcement or to the community they serve to expect the department to be able to investigate their friends and colleagues in an objective, unbiased manner. This is especially true when the use of force results in death.

IS MPD MOVING AWAY FROM ENGAGED COMMUNITY POLICING?

Speakers:
*State Rep. Chris Taylor
*UW Law Professor, Michael Scott
*Former MPD Captain of Training, Cheri Maples
*Kevin Bailey of Milwaukee Matters
*Open community discussion & opportunity to submit your input to the Police and Fire Commission.

You can make a difference! If there is to be change, it requires YOU to take action. Please join your community in helping transform current problematic police practices in these areas — let your voice be heard, and listen to others, as the Police & Fire Commission begins its process of hiring a new Chief.

COME AND INFLUENCE THE PROCESS!
