WHAT DO WE WANT FOR POLICING IN MADISON?

Now is the time for community input as the Police and Fire Commission selects a new Chief– one who will set the tone and direction of MPD policy and practice for years to come. Give your voice on key issues and questions about the direction of MPD practice and policy for years to come.

WHAT IS THE STANDARD FOR DEADLY FORCE THAT WE WANT FOR OUR COMMUNITY? Beginning in November of 2012, with the shooting of an unarmed man on the east side, there have now been 3 police shootings resulting in the death of citizens — deaths that many people believe were preventable.

SHOULD LAW ENFORCEMENT INVESTIGATE THEMSELVES IN THE USE OF FORCE INCIDENTS? It is not fair to either law enforcement or to the community they serve to expect the department to be able to investigate their friends and colleagues in an objective, unbiased manner. This is especially true when the use of force results in death.

IS MPD MOVING AWAY FROM ENGAGED COMMUNITY POLICING?

PFC Listening Session

The Madison Police and Fire Commission (PFC) will also hold a public listening session for input on the hiring of the new police chief. This listening session is scheduled for Monday, October 14, 2013, at 6:00 p.m., in the Madison Public Library downtown branch. In addition to the October 16 meeting that we are hosting, we encourage people to attend and participate in the PFC October 14 listening session.
