The Meeting for Everyone (City) Week Ahead

Currently, there are 46! meetings scheduled for next week, and I’m sure more will pop up . . . that is an unusually high number, you can see them all here, but these are the ones I find of interest.

Monday, November 16, 2009
4:30 PM MADISON ELECTION ADVISORY COMMITTEE ROOM 103A
– Nothing in particular, just many interesting topics (ballot printing, early voting, electronic voting, felony voting, etc.) that they will be discussing.

4:45 PM LANDMARKS COMMISSION ROOM LL-110 MMB
617-619 Mendota Court (8 story building in Langdon National Historic District)

5:30 PM PLAN COMMISSION ROOM 260 MMB
Inclusionary Zoning Policy Revisions (Yeah, can you believe, 6 – 7 months since the committee finished their work revising the policies, they’re finally being passed.)
Towing company ordinance, the issue everyone is predicting we will be getting sued over no matter what we do.
Losing more lodging rooms. (This isn’t a comment on the project as much as it is with this economy people need these affordable options that have been disappearing for the last few years.)

5:35 PM COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE 1625 NORTHPORT DR
This was originally supposed to be a public hearing for input from the non-profits on the priorities and funding decision making process, but instead, it is a regular meeting due to this cancelled meeting.
Dane County Task Force on Racial Disparities in the Criminal Justice System Report
Dane County Task Force on Poverty Report
Funding Priorities for 2011
2011 Funding Allocations (I hear that some committee members have the information, but nothing yet available to the public, hard to know if you want to comment if there is nothing to comment on.)

Tuesday, November 17, 2009
8:00 AM CENTRAL PARK DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION TASK FORCE ROOM 108 CCB
– There no info available, but this is where the rubber hits the road. What will be the role of Center for Resilient Cities and the City be as they move forward.

5:00 PM AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMISSION ROOM LL-120 MMB
Dane County Task Force on Racial Disparities in the Criminal Justice System Report

6:30 PM COMMON COUNCIL ROOM 201 CCB
#5 – 1246-1252 Williamson Street and 308-310 South Baldwin Street.
#10 – Eliminating the City’s Shared Appreciation when investing in low-income housing and community development projects. (I’m curious the strategy on this, when this money goes away, what will we have to invest in community projects? What happens as our funds dwindle?)
#13 – Funding to MSCR to run the Meadowood Neighborhood Center (Is this going to become permanent? Originally it was from the Emerging Neighborhood Funds.)
#19 – Police overtime report
#22 – $50M in Water Revenue bonds (no info available, but the Water Utility Board and Board of Estimates will be meeting prior to the Council meeting to approve this as well)
#41 – Hiring practices report.
#42 – No meetings on elections day! (Finally, we progressives were pushing for this back in 2001!)
#47 – 25% of city electricity and fuel cost from renewable energy by 2025

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
1:30 PM PLANNING SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE SENIOR CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITTEE 330 W. MIFFLIN ST.
– Zoning Code Rewrite! (This one surprised me! And also made me curious, how are they going to do this in a half hour?)

4:30 PM COMMITTEE ON SWEATFREE PURCHASES ROOM 406 CCB
– No agenda, but this is another issue that has been worked on since . . . well, since Jose Sentamanat was on the City council in the last 90’s.

5:00 PM LANDMARKS COMMISSION MADISON SENIOR CENTER, 330 W MIFFLIN ST, ROOMS 1 & 2
– The links here and here made me laugh out loud. Makes a point I guess. This is supposed to be a joint meeting with UDC on the Edgewater, but of course, there is no Landmarks application so they have no information to consider, really. They’re just going to get the same old sales job/public relations song and dance.

5:00 PM MADISON ARTS COMMISSION ROOM LL-110 MMB
Zoning Code Rewrite (It’s starting to bug me that the reports to various committees (here’s impact on the arts) are not in writing, so you’d have to show up to all the meetings to see what was discussed and clearly in a week like this, you can’t. In the end, they’ll tell us about all the meetings they went to, but won’t have it broken down so the regular Joe and Jane can see what was discussed and what is happening.)

5:00 PM URBAN DESIGN COMMISSION MADISON SENIOR CENTER, 330 W MIFFLIN ST, ROOMS 1 & 2
– Same joint meeting with Landmarks, same non-information as at Landmarks. I didn’t see any of the materials the UDC had asked for.

5:30 PM ALCOHOL LICENSE REVIEW COMMITTEE ROOM 260 MMB
Amending the Alcohol License Density Plan (drugstores out, bowling allies in.)
Prohibiting sales to known drunks, er “habitually intoxicated persons”
Prohibiting bartenders, license holders, waitstaff and other employees from drinking on the job.
– And raising lots of fees and fines, check out the agenda for the details.

5:30 PM BOARD OF EDUCATION – COMMON COUNCIL LIAISON COMMITTEE ROOM 103A CCB
Wienie-gate review! Should vending be allowed around the schools?
– On-line campaign finance reports for School Board (no materials attached)
– Update on Safe Routes to Schools (no materials attached)
– Community Services goals and priorities (uh, they’re meeting the same time as that same discussion is taking place and they don’t even have the 5th draft attached to their agenda?)

5:35 PM COMMUNITY SERVICES COMMITTEE MADISON WATER UTILITY, 119 E OLIN AVE
2011 Goals and Priorities
– 2011 Funding Guidelines (still no info available)
– What to do with the extra $100,000 that they got from the council budget process (no materials available? COLA increases? Restore funding to groups cut? A little of both?)

Thursday, November 19, 2009
1:00 PM CITY OF MADISON/AFSCME LOCAL 60 NEGOTIATIONS ROOM 103A CCB
– Why are these negotiations being done publicly this year? Typically we go into closed session in order to negotiate contracts. This seems odd. And I don’t ever recall these meeting being publicly noticed til this year. And if they really want to make them public, why are there no attachments for the proposals?

1:00 PM WOMEN’S ISSUES COMMITTEE ROOM 260 MMB
– No agenda currently available

4:00 PM LOW INCOME BUS PASS PROGRAM COMMITTEE CENTRAL DISTRICT COMMUNITY ROOM CCB
– Given the past number of bus passes distributed, will they have enough for next year, even with the budget amendment?

4:30 PM COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY ROOM 313 MMB
– They have like 28 agenda items including Allied phase one and two, Truax, Lakepoint, Truman Olson, Villager, Burr Oaks, bonds for WARF and redevelopment of Badger-Ann-Parks Street area. Most of it doesn’t have links, but some do, you’ll have to take a peak.

5:00 PM ALLIED AREA TASK FORCE ALLIED BOYS & GIRLS CLUB, 4619 JENEWEIN RD
– Update from CDA
Safety and Security Report with recommendations

5:00 PM COMMISSION ON PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES ROOM 260 MMB
Motion to have 10% of housing built to be accessible

5:00 PM EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES COMMISSION ROOM LL-120 MMB
Unlawful Trespass and Menacing Panhandling
