On Friday, when most people weren’t paying attention . . . students were the latest victims. Why?
As a former Student Council Member and a UC Representative, it was often frustrating, but still valuable – which must be why the Republicans attacked it.
Rep. Taylor Condemns Attack on Students’ Rights
MADISON – Last week, the Joint Committee on Finance voted in favor of motion #434, which eliminated the funding mechanism for the United Council of UW Students, America’s oldest statewide student association. Following the vote, Rep. Chris Taylor (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“The United Council of UW Students has been fighting for students’ rights since 1960. They are the leading advocate for students on matters such as financial aid, tuition, quality education and shared governance on our UW System campuses. They successfully negotiated in good faith with Republicans in favor of a tuition freeze. Yet, Republicans still saw fit to eliminate United Council’s funding mechanism and suppress students’ voices and participation in university governance.
“Students democratically choose membership in United Council by referendum on each campus. Last week, Republicans took not only the students collective choice away, but they also took away their voice. Our students are the future of our great state. We should do everything we can to further encourage their civic engagement, not stifle it.”

I know I’m a little late, but it really is hard to pay attention to all the shit flowing out of the capital.
AMEN Brenda!
Like this one yesterday. They now will be making voting much harder for everyone, ending even more local control, AND to balance it out making it so much easier for corporations to have more access to anonymously buying our elections!
SOme of this damage is going to be next to impossible to recover from!
