Here’s the items I found of interest in the news, and a few that were not in the news.
LOCAL NEWS
SOGLIN A NATIONAL LEADER ON PEACE
Will appear on CNN this morning to talk about the resolution at the US Conference of Mayors calling to bring the War Money (and Troops) home. The Huffington Post article on the resolution. The WSJ version of him being on CNN.
Need more, this has a link to the blow-by-blow.
CANDIDATE DROPS OUT OF RACE FOR PARISI’S SEAT
Signature snafu. Collected them before Walker called for an election.
MADISON BUDGET STILL SUCKS
Still at least a $10M hole, up to $20M. Projects could be delayed, lay-offs and furloughs on the table. But hey, its no longer $27M.
CHIEF WRAY’S HOPE
No drinking while armed, please. Mahoney concurs.
CHURCH WARS AT PLAN COMMISSION
Article on the feud between the Episcopal and Lutheran churches on campus. And a question about how much light can reach the worship area and a few other things . . . .
MADISON SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES PRELIMINARY SCHOOL BUDGET
They spend $17M less, average taxpayer saves $40. I don’t know about you, but I’d gladly give the schools $40.
SUMMER FREAKFEST LAST WEEKEND
Tea partiers and naked bike riders. (Pictures NSFW)
CITIZEN DAVE THE OPTIMIST
Might consider another run for Mayor? I still prefer the non-glib realist.
STATE NEWS
100 STUDENTS LIKELY TO NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD TUITION AT UW SYSTEM
Thank Scott walker. Their payments will go from about $9K to $24K at UW Madison. Why? The students were part of a program where they could qualify for in state tuition if they could prove he or she graduated from a Wisconsin high school, had lived here for three years and sign an affidavit that he or she will seek permanent residency as soon as possible.
WISCONSIN DOMESTIC PARTNERSHIP LAW UPHELD
And probably will be appealed. ACLU blog on it.
REPUBLICANS WANT TO COMBINE THEIR RECALL CASES WITH THE DEMS
Wonder what they are up to.
SCOTT WALKER’S JOBS PLAN
Cutting 50 jobs from University System Administration.
CAP TIMES THOUGHT WALKERVILLE WORKED WELL
Served its purpose well.
NOT IN THE NEWS
CITY ATTORNEY RETREATS FROM ORIGINAL POSITION
No vacancies will occur with redistricting, all alders will remain in place, but where they represent is murky.
It’s funny the lengths they go to to make sure this is hard to blog. First, the PDF is not able to be cut and pasted and second, the memo link is awkward in that you can’t link directly to it, but instead they give you a link where you have to open the document. Very user unfriendly. But then again, when you’re “not” admitting you’re wrong, you probably don’t want many people to see it. By the way, this is item 105 on the amended agenda for tonight. Making matters worse for the public to have any knowledge of what is going on.
WANNA SEE IN BREESE STEVENS FIELD
You know, the park with the walls around it that you can only see when there is a soccer game . . .

UNEMPLOYMENT, POVERTY AND CRIME: HELPING EASTSIDE YOUTH IN CRISIS
Thursday, June 23 6:30-8:00
Hawthorne Branch Library Community Room
2707 E. WashingtonUnemployment and chronic joblessness mean some Eastsiders are always struggling. Poverty and hunger are on the rise in our communities while programs to support the needy are being cut back. Feelings of hopelessness and frustration lead some, often youth, to act out in dangerous, anti-social ways including muggings and other street crime.
What can we do to address the dismal conditions many Eastside youth face? What community based resources can we mobilize to help guide them into positive roles? What programs and projects can we create ourselves to address the interrelated problems of unemployment, poverty and crime in our community?
Come join the EINPC and Will Green from Mentoring Positives to discuss these serious concerns. Mentoring Positives, based in Worthington Park, is exploring innovative, cutting edge solutions like its Off the Block Salsa project. To get a better sense of MP’s critical work, watch this short news report on YouTube.
Please plan to attend this important meeting. Come share your insights and help develop ideas for how to respond to the current crisis among Eastside youth. You can make a real difference in both the lives of Eastisde youth and also the larger community. Your ideas and participation are sincerely welcomed and appreciated. Hope to see you Thursday!
