Subject: Central Police DistrictHello,
As we wind down our second week of protests around the Capital Square, I thought I would give you a quick update on the district. Event staffing is utilizing a resources from all aspects of the department. Staffing levels for the event are determined daily for the next day and are in proportion to anticipated rallies/demonstrations. Contrary to what national media is portraying, there have been NO riots in Madison.
We have been blessed with rallies and demonstrations that have focused on peaceful participation and expression of first amendment rights.
All indications to date show that today and tomorrow will be light days with Saturday being a similar day to last Saturday crowd wise. We have been disheartened by comments recently by the governor regarding ‘agitators’ in the crowds as well as rumors of State Agencies plans to empty the Capital building. Chief Wray is actively working on both of these topics expressing MPD’s and the Cities concerns.
District wise, we are holding steady. We maintain our staffing levels in patrol and investigative services and staff continues to do excellent work during all the competing issues.
Please feel free to contact me at any time with concerns or questions. I will be walking around the square today, checking in with business on how they are doing.
